Ergonomics
Definition: Ergonomics is defined as the science related to people and their work, embodying the anatomic, physiologic, and mechanical principles affecting the efficient use of human energy.
Using ergonomics, existing problems are proactively identified and injuries are prevented in the workplace. This is achieved through onsite ergonomic assessments, hazard identification, and employee training. Ergonomics can reduce physical discomfort and strain, repetitive task injuries, and improve workplace design and efficiency.
Benefits of Ergonomics:
-
Provides practical solutions to improve productivity, optimize performance and prevent workplace injuries
-
Reduces employer costs through decreases in absenteeism, lost time injuries and WCB rates
-
Increases productivity, quality of work, job satisfaction and employee morale
-
Improves employee retention resulting in reduced training costs
Employer Obligations
Manitoba provincial legislation in the Workplace Safety and Health Act outlines the employer's obligations to "identify risk factors and offer control measures" for employees. It also spells out the employer's "duty to accommodate the injured worker". Enabling Access will assist the workplace in fulfilling the employer obligations by establishing an effective, ergonomic and injury prevention program in cooperation with the WPSH committee and facility representatives.

Individual Ergonomic Assessments
Our individual ergonomic assessments will identify risk factors associated with the job demands and will provide a range of control measures to reduce or eliminate exposure of the employees to the identified risk factors. Assessments can be performed in a variety of settings, including office, industrial, manufacturing, laboratory, schools and medical facilities to decrease employee discomfort and pain and to prevent future work related injuries. The assessment includes an interview with the employee, photographs taken of the workstation, job description review and environmental survey including lighting measurements if required. A Detail report with photographs is included and recommendations for administrative, engineering and behavioral changes are specified. Follow up consultation to help choose and set up office furniture and accessories is available.
The "Basic Ergonomics" Training session for groups is recommended for both small and large businesses interested in teaching their employees the basic ergonomic principles and human anatomy as they relate to postures, movement and productivity in the workplace. Common workplace musculoskeletal risk factors are identified and solutions are provided to help the participants learn to set up their own workstation, to prevent injury and to promote a healthy "workstyle".
