Workplace Wellness Education
  

Our education and training seminars are available for small or large groups and cover a variety of wellness topics relevant to any workplace setting. These training sessions are part of the early intervention focus of our injury prevention approach and can be provided in a "Lunch-and-Learn" format, where the topic is covered in an hour with time for questions at the end of the presentation. Alternatively the topics listed below can be presented in a more formal and interactive approach and can be built into a half day workshop

   
 
Basic Ergonomics
This one hour session covers ergonomic principles and human anatomy as they relate to postures, movement and productivity in the workplace. Common workplace musculoskeletal risk factors are identified and solutions are provided to help the participants learn to set up their own workstation, to prevent injury and to promote a healthy "workstyle". Time for participant questions is included.
 
Train-The-Trainer, Ergonomic Assessments 
This half day course teaches facility representatives the foundation of ergonomic principles, how to assess for musculoskeletal risk factors and how to solve common ergonomic challenges. An ergonomic assessment checklist is provided as well as a process for communicating ergonomic risk identification in the workplace. Participants are provided with practical instruction for working through sample ergonomic assessments and are given worksheets to practice these skills.  On-going support from the Enabling Access Consultant is provided to ensure assessments are being completed effectively.  Participants will be provided with skills and tools to conduct the ergonomic assessments in-house with minimal outside support required.
 
Safe Manual Materials Handling
This half day workshop deals with Manual Materials Handling (MMH) which means moving or handling things by lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, carrying, holding, or restraining. MMH is also the most common cause of occupational fatigue, low back pain and lower back injuries. Safe lifting and handling techniques are reviewed for a variety of materials and settings and participants are provided with injury prevention techniques and safe practice skills for the workplace.
 

 

Managing Stress At Work and Home
This one hour session covers the anatomical and physiological effects of stress, identifies the triggers and  the responses to stress. Long term effects of stress, as well as home and work stress factors, are reviewed. Healthy strategies for dealing with stress are discussed and recommendations for improved health relating to stress reduction are provided.
 
Nutrition and Healthy Living
This one hour session reviews  the important role nutrition plays in healthy living and the consequences of poor nutrition on health of Canadian. The Canada Food Guide is analyzed and related to the participants in terms of age, gender and nutritional requirements. Tips for essential foods for healthy eating on the go and healthy eating for shift workers are provided. Resources for additional nutritional information is provided.
 
The Aging Worker 
This one hour session provides information on the benefits of exercise and movement for the aging worker. The natural effects of aging are reviewed in detail and related to job performance and personal achievements. Tips for maintaining physical and cognitive skills are provided and risk factors for disease and injury are identified. Participants are provided with health resources to improve health and function at work and home. 

  

Occupational Vibration Exposure
This one hour presentation covers the physiological effects of vibration exposure, the physics of vibration, International standards, how to measure vibration in the workplace and explores Hand/Arm Vibration Exposure as well as Whole Body Vibration Exposure. Participants are provided with guidelines for assessing and controlling the vibration levels of tools and equipment in the workplace to prevent injuries and measure outcomes of those controls.
